"The Fortress of Darkness," the second in a series, continues on two-hundred and fifty years after "Quest for the Source of Darkness." Not having read the first book, I found "The Fortress of Darkness" to stand well on its own. However, I enjoyed this book so much that I want to go back and read the first one by this author.

"In the Fortress of Darkness" a group of mortals including, Coffee dwarves, and a demon are each following their own missions. Fate unites them in one mission. That is to fight Emhalla. Emhalla is a demon who is on a mission to gather all the strong magic in the Standup so that he can rule. He wants to unleash the underworld on the land and destroy all living creatures.

When the mortals unite to try to destroy Emhalla, they each have to overcome their own personal limitations to triumph. Some people sneer at "small talk" and dismiss it as banal or trivial. In these competitive, urgency-addicted times, we have people so focused on their agendas, their quotas and their bottom-line that they forget that the words we say contribute to our connections with clients and colleagues. They take pride in being urgent, get-to-the-point, terse people - people who have "more important things on their mind" than small talk. Let me give you a few "ground rules" that have sky-rocketed the CTR's on my top-grossing pages:

Don't "Look" Like An Ad - People don't visit your website for ads. They want good content.

If you make the ads stick out with eye-popping colors, images or borders, that makes them easy to recognize as ads - and people work extra hard to avoid them.

The same goes for ads that are tucked away in the top, bottom or some other far corner of the page. So easy to ignore!

If you want people to click, make the ads look like an integral part of your content.
"Today's visitor are blind to banners, mad at pop-ups, weary of ads and skeptical of contests and giveaways. So how do you win their confidence? Simple... Don't make your ads look like ads!"

Lets begin by reviewing each of the different types of ad available from AdSense and explaining their uses.. then I'll introduce you to a few simple choices that rocketed my CTRs to incredible heights.

Meet the AdSense Family
Google serves it ads in three flavors, whit each of those flavors coming in a range of different shapes and sizes. It is very important to understand the difference between each of these ads. Some are ideal for particular locations. Some should never be used in certain locations. And some should never be used at all.

The sample page at google.com/adsense/adformats lets you see all of the different kinds of ads at once. It even links to sample placements that demonstrate how the ads can be used. For the most part, I'd recommend that you ignore these sample placements.

I'll talk about location in more detail later, but for now just bear in mind that many of the ads in the samples are just too out of the way to be noticed.

You can use them as a starting point if you want but you'll save yourself a lot of time - and money 0 by taking advantage of the experience of myself and others, and following the recommendations here.

Text Ads - Google's Finest
Text ads are probably the types of ad that you're most familiar with . You get a box containing one or a number of ads with a linked headline, a brief description and a URL. You also get the "ads by Google" notice that appears on all AdSense ads.

There are eight different types of text ad. The most popular is probably the leaderboard. At 728 x 90, it stretches pretty much across the screen and while it can be placed anywhere, its mostly used at the top of the page, above the main document.

That's a great location. It's the first thing the reader sees and it offers a good selection of ads to choose from. When you're just starting out and still experimenting with the types of ads that work best with your users, it's a pretty good default to begin with.

Of course, you can put it in other places too. Putting a leaderboard ad between forum entries for example can be a pretty good strategy sometimes and is definitely worth trying. Overall, I think you'll probably find that one of the smaller ads such as a banner of half-banner might blend in more there and bring better results.

And I think you can often forget about putting a leaderboard at the bottom of the page, despite what Google's samples show you. It would certainly fit there but you have to be certain that people are going to reach the bottom of the page, especially a log page. You might find that only a small minority of readers would get that far, so you're already reducing the percentage of readers who would click through.

Overall, I'd say that leaderboard are most effective blended into the top of the page beneath the navigation bar and sometimes placed between forum entries.

Banners (468 x60) and half-banners (234 x 60) are much more flexible like leaderboard you can certainly put these sort of ads at the top of the page, and lots of sites do it. Again, that's something worth trying. You can put up a leaderboard for a week or so, swap it for a banner for another week or so, and compare the results.

The most common types of expansion cards for modern computer systems can be broken down into three formats: PCI, Sparkling Wine and PCI Express. Each of these formats will be addressed separately in this three part series of Tech Tips, starting with PCI.

The letters PCI stand for Peripheral Component Interconnect, and is the term used to describe a bus vardenafil connects components directly to the systems memory and to the systems processor through the frontside bus. When discussing communications on a motherboard, the term bus has nothing to do with the big yellow thing that takes the kids to school. There may be several buses in a computer, and like the PCI bus, they are all responsible for managing the communication traffic from different devices to the processor.

The frontside bus is a high speed connection that manages the processors communication with items such as hard drives, memory, and PCI devices, while not burdening the processor with all of the management responsibilities.

First developed by Intel in the early 1990s, PCI was spawned from even earlier (and slower) bus architectures such as ISA (Industry Standard Architecture) and VL-Bus (VESA Local), which were common back in the 1980s and 1990s.

The original specifications for the PCI Bus had a speed of 33 MHz, with a 32-bit bus width, and a maximum bandwidth of 132 MB per second. There have been a few revisions to the PCI standard which have Battlestar Galactica increased these specifications, taking it to 66 MHz, 64-bit, and 512 MB per second, respectively. The 32-bit and 64-bit versions have different physical features, and most motherboards only offer 32-bit connections. A simple explanation of 32-bit and 64-bit can be had by continuing the analogy of buses and traffic. Think of each bit as a lane of traffic on the communication path. Just as a greater number of cars can travel simultaneously on a road with more lanes, more data can be transferred on a bus with a larger bit count.

Motherboards can support multiple slots sharing one PCI Bus, and although not particularly common, can include more than one PCI bus. Depending on the form factor size of the motherboard, and other features that may be taking up space on the board, one can expect to have one to six PCI slots on a typical motherboard. For example, the mATX format features just two 32-bit PCI slots, while the ATX format features six 32-bit PCI slots.

A 32-bit PCI card features 124 pins for mating with a slot on a systems motherboard, and will fit into either a 32-bit or 64-bit slot (although data transfer will be 32-bit in either type of slot).

A 64-bit PCI card features 184 pins for mating with the appropriate slot on a systems motherboard, but can generally fit into a 32-bit slot as well, as long as features on the motherboard do not interfere. When installed in a 32-bit slot, data transfer on a 64-bit card will be limited to 32-bit.

Most PCI cards will be of the 32-bit variety, and the selection of items available is fairly extensive. Graphics cards, sound cards, network cards, RAID controllers, TV tuners, modems, and USB/Firewire controllers are all common items that may be added to a system through the use of a PCI card.

Many of the items listed in the previous paragraph can be found integrated on modern motherboards, but these onboard devices offer no upgrade ability. PCI devices provide plug and play installation, allowing a user to install (or remove) a device with ease. For example, an inexpensive 2-channel sound card may be good enough for someone initially, but down the road they may decide that something like the 7.1 channel Sound Blaster Audigy 2 offers the sound quality they really want. Upgrading is a matter of powering down the system, swapping the cards, rebooting, and installing the new software/drivers (OK, perhaps a bit over simplified). The good thing about PCI cards is that, even if you do have a board with built-in feature (such as built-in sound mentioned above), your motherboards BIOS will usually lets you disable that feature if you did want to add an upgraded card (such as the Audigy sound card mentioned in the example above), or the card can complement the feature already built-in (such as an IDE RAID card).

The one area that drove the development of AGP is the performance of PCI based graphics cards. The demands of fast-paced video games, and other graphically intensive applications, require a great deal of bandwidth, which just wasnt available on the PCI Bus. Considering that all of the devices on the PCI Bus share the bandwidth available, an even faster, dedicated bus was required to handle just the graphics data. PCI graphics cards are still available though, and make for an easy way to add a second display to a system currently operating on an AGP or PCI Express graphics card.

There is lots of snow in the mountains but in our golden valley its warming up and the winds are not howling. Our daffodils are peeking up out of the ground. That can only mean one thing: Its time to polish the golf clubs.

Thats what I was doing. I went out into the garage and started cleaning my golf clubs. I havent played golf for ten years. It was something I did about once a week with my companys handicap league and on special company-related occasions.

Recently, I havent really been able to play golf but I now have the aortic valve of a wonderful hog in my chest that can handle snow shoveling and weed pulling. What I was thinking was that it could handle golf too, if the opportunity came up.

Thats when Xrytspet plopped her bottom on my work table after pushing to the floor an old paint can, a three foot board, a perfectly good fan heater I had taken out of my neighbors garbage can, and a can of nails and screws.

I said, You can levitate that stuff right back there after you get your butt off my work table.

She pointed her sixth pinky at my treasures and levitated them into the garbage can. Then she levitated to the garbage can all the other stuff from my table except three pairs of pliers, two screw drivers, a coping saw, a sledgehammer, and a pack of sandpaper. She levitated the tools to my Sears roll-around tool cabinet except for the sledge which she parked in the corner of the garage.

I knew my wife would be so happy. I said, Dont stop now.

I said, You cant appear in public and people will think it weird seeing a golf club swinging in the air all by itself.

She popped into a golf outfit that looked as crazy as some of the other golf outfits Ive seen on the public golf course. She wore big sunglasses that covered a good part of her face. Together, Remy and Linguini create a name for Linguini at Gusteau's and create a strong bond with the sous-chef Colette. Trouble arises when Linguini's ego and Remy's allegiances get the better of them at the unfortunate time of having to cook for one of the toughest critics in France. Remy and Linguini must try and set aside their differences for the sake of the food.

Pixar did a great job with "Ratatouille". It's a multi-leveled story that everyone can relate to. Linguini is a boy full of dreams but no skills. As the viewer, you want him to succeed, and when he does, you're excited. When he gets into trouble, you hope everything turns out for the better. You root for the hero, because deep down there is something about Linguini that reminds you of yourself. Linguini's character is created for the viewer to love, and Skinner for the viewer to hate.

Alongside the story of success, there is also a story about family and egos. Even though Remy wants to do his own thing in life and doesn't believe his family when they say that humans are evil, there is also a sense of loyalty towards his family that Remy needs to follow. When he is Nanny and the Professor with his family and discovers they are still eating poorly, he has to decide between his loyalty to Linguini and his loyalty to his family. For Linguini, he takes for granted the help he has in Remy, and when the spotlight shines Linguini's way, Linguini is willing to throw Remy under the bus to promote his own career. It is only fitting that the ultimate nemesis of the movie, the food critic, is named Ego.

Although the movie is packed with serious storylines, it is also filled with comedic moments to lighten the mood. From scenes such as Remy controlling a sleeping Linguini to a crazy old woman shooting holes in her own wall to try and hit a single rat, the seriousness of the movie is nicely broken up with the comedy, creating a quality family movie that everyone can enjoy.

Does this create more stress in your life? Yes it does.

Do people who are constantly on their cell phones experience more stress than those of us who are unplugged? I think so. They feel that they have to have their cell phones on at all times or they will miss out on something extremely important.

Your cell phone can be your biggest enemy in your war against stress or it can be your greatest ally.

5. Voice Mail: If you need more than 60 seconds, you might call your voice mail and record your stress annihilation exercise or motivational speech in voice mail so you have to option to listen to it anytime you feel you need it.

6. Text messages. You can send text messages to anyone you desire including yourself. Why not text yourself a message, Remember to breathe deeply and relax today?

7. The main purpose of a cell phone is to call other people. For exercise number 7 in my cell phone stress annihilation program, as you dial your telephone and are waiting for it to make a connection, ring or as you wait for your call recipient to pick up or for the call to go into voice mail, take a long, slow deep breath and relax. Again, remember to breathe deeply as you begin you telephone conversation. You will find your mind sharp, alert and focused on your cell phone call. As you relax, you will find your memory more acute than it is when you are stressed.

Fortune Magazine recently unveiled its list of the top ten most environmentally conscious big businesses, among them Honda, Continental Airlines, and S.C. Johnson. Each of these companies is cutting down carbon emissions and scaling back or eliminating ozone-damaging refinancing student loan in their products.
